Vegetable-tanned leather is one of those materials that people either understand immediately or find confusing. It looks pale and almost stiff when new, and it marks easily in the first few months. That is not a defect. It is the leather before it has had time to become itself.

The difference between vegetable tanning and chrome tanning

Most leather goods sold today are chrome-tanned. Chrome tanning is fast, consistent, and produces a soft, uniform leather that is easy to work with and resistant to water. It is also a closed system: the leather does not change much with wear and does not develop a patina.

Vegetable tanning uses plant-based tannins, traditionally from oak bark or chestnut, and takes weeks rather than hours. The resulting leather is firmer, more structured, and reactive to light, heat, and the oils from your hands. Over time it darkens, softens at the points of flex, and develops a surface character that is specific to how it has been used.

What happens in the first six months

In the first few months, vegetable-tanned leather will mark from water, scratch from keys, and pick up colour from dark denim. This is the period when people sometimes think they have bought a fragile product. They have not. They have bought a product that is in the process of developing its surface.

The marks from the first few months tend to blend into the overall patina as the leather darkens. A scratch that looks alarming in month two is usually invisible by month six. The key is to keep the leather conditioned during this period so that it does not dry out and crack at the flex points.

Conditioning and basic care

A light application of a neutral leather conditioner every three to four months is enough for a belt that is worn regularly. We recommend a beeswax-based conditioner rather than a silicone product, which can seal the surface and prevent the patina from developing properly.

Avoid getting the belt very wet in the first year if you can. If it does get wet, let it dry slowly away from direct heat and apply conditioner once it is fully dry. Do not use a hair dryer or leave it on a radiator.

The vegetable-tanned belt on the floor is cut to order in the shop. If you want to see the leather before committing to a size, come in any day we are open.
